Shey Monastery is located on a high rock about 15 km south of the Leh town on the bank of Indus River. The gompa was built by the first Ladakhi king Lhachen Palgyigon. According to legend, it was the seat of power of the pre Tibetan Kings. It has one prime attrction- Victory Stupa, which is topped with gold. 12 meter high gold statue of future Buddha (Maitreya Buddha) is another attraction of this monastery. Despite of being one of the oldest monasteries of the region, Shey Gompa is not used regularly and thus remains open till 9 AM in the morning. The museum of the monastery has wealthy collection of royal costumes and Jewellary, unique Thangkas, weapons, etc. There are twon seasonal festivals held in this monastery every year. The first one (Shey-Rul-lo) is held on the 26thb and 27th day of the 1st month of the Tibetan Calendar and second festival marks the harvesting season and called as Shey-Surbo-Lo, which is held in 10th day of the 7th month (Tibetan Calendar).
